About Venice & Veneto

Venice needs no introduction, and the Veneto beyond it, Verona, Palladian villas, and the Prosecco hills, turns a famous city into a full region to explore.

About Venice & Veneto

Venice needs no introduction, but the region around it does. The Veneto stretches from the lagoon across a plain of Renaissance villas and walled cities to the shores of Lake Garda and up into the Dolomites, and most visitors who come for the city never see it. For guests who pair a few days in Venice with visits to the Palladian countryside, the Prosecco hills, or the mountains, it is one of the most varied regions in Italy.

How to Get to Venice & Veneto

Venice Marco Polo (VCE) is the main international gateway, set on the edge of the lagoon. Because Venice itself is free of cars, guests reach the city by water taxi or the Alilaguna boat, roughly 30 minutes across the water to St Mark's; by road, Verona is about 1.25 hours away and the Dolomites around Cortina about 2.5 hours.

Verona Villafranca (VRN), in the west, is the better choice for guests staying near Verona or on Lake Garda, roughly 30 minutes from the lake.

Treviso (TSF) is a smaller airport handy for Treviso and the Prosecco hills. Venice sits on the main rail lines, with fast trains reaching Verona, Padua, and Vicenza in under 1 hour and Milan in about 2.25 hours. A car is essential for exploring the Veneto, but useless in Venice itself, where guests leave the car at Piazzale Roma or in Mestre and travel by boat.

Where to go in Venice & Veneto

Venice and the lagoon
There is nowhere else like Venice: a city of 118 islands laced by canals, with St Mark's Basilica and the Doge's Palace, the Grand Canal, and centuries of art packed into a place you cross entirely on foot or by boat. The wider lagoon rewards a day of its own, from the glass furnaces of Murano and the painted houses of Burano to the near empty island of Torcello, where Venice began. The city is busiest by day; staying nearby and exploring early or late, once the cruise crowds have gone, is a different experience altogether.

Verona and Lake Garda
In the west of the region, Verona is one of Italy's most likable cities, built in pink marble around a Roman arena that still stages opera each summer, and forever tied to Romeo and Juliet. Just beyond lie the vineyards of Valpolicella, home of the great Amarone, and Soave, and the eastern shore of Lake Garda, with its lemon groves, castle towns like Malcesine, and the resort of Bardolino. It is the sunniest, most Mediterranean corner of the Veneto.

Vicenza and the Palladian villas
Vicenza is the city of Andrea Palladio, the 16th century architect who shaped the look of country houses from England to Virginia, and its center and surrounding villas are a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The Villa Almerico Capra, known as La Rotonda, and the Teatro Olimpico are the essential sights, while out in the countryside and along the Brenta Canal toward Venice stand dozens more villas, some still lived in, others open for visits. This is the architectural heart of the region.

Padua and the Euganean Hills
Padua, one of the oldest university cities in Europe, holds Giotto's frescoes in the Scrovegni Chapel, among the most important paintings in Italy, and the vast pilgrimage basilica of St Anthony. South of the city, the Euganean Hills rise green and volcanic from the plain, dotted with vineyards, monasteries, and the thermal spa towns of Abano and Montegrotto, where people have taken the waters since Roman times. It is a quiet, restorative counterpoint to the cities.

Treviso, the Prosecco Hills, and Asolo
North of Venice, Treviso is a small city of canals, frescoed houses, and arcades, the birthplace of Tiramisu and the home of the prized winter radicchio. Above it rise the steep vineyards of Conegliano and Valdobbiadene, the UNESCO listed hills where Prosecco is made, threaded by a scenic wine road. Nearby, the hilltop town of Asolo has drawn artists and writers for centuries, and Bassano del Grappa, on the river below the mountains, gives its name to grappa and to a beautiful covered wooden bridge designed by Palladio.

The Dolomites and Cortina
The far north of the Veneto climbs into the Dolomites, the pale, jagged peaks that are among the most beautiful mountains in the world and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Their capital is Cortina d'Ampezzo, an elegant resort and one of the hosts of the 2026 Winter Olympics, with skiing in winter and hiking, climbing, and mountain biking in summer. Around it lie the valleys of the Cadore and lakes like Misurina, within reach of a day trip but rewarding a stay of their own.

When to go to Venice & Veneto

The best months to visit Venice and the Veneto depend on what you are looking for, but April to October is when you find warm weather, the cities at their best, and the countryside and hills in full color.

Spring is lovely, with mild days ideal for Venice and the villas and the vineyards coming into leaf, though the city is busy around Easter. Summer is hot and at its most crowded in Venice, which is when the Dolomites, with their cool air and hiking, and Lake Garda come into their own, alongside a full calendar of events, from the Verona opera to the Venice Film Festival in early September. Autumn brings the grape harvest, the white truffles of the hills, thinner crowds, and some of the year's finest light. Winter is quiet and atmospheric, with the Venice Carnival in February, skiing at Cortina, and the chance of both fog and high water in the lagoon, which many find part of the city's magic.

Why Visit Venice & Veneto

No other Italian region packs so much variety around a single, world famous city. Venice is one of the most extraordinary places on earth, and also one of the most visited. And the region around it is such a gift: Palladian villas, the Prosecco hills, Verona and its opera, Renaissance Padua, and the Dolomites, all quieter, and all within easy reach, perfect for daytrips.

The food and wine belong in the first rank. This is the land of Prosecco and of Amarone, one of Italy's greatest reds, of Soave and Valpolicella, poured alongside the small plates known as cicchetti, seafood risotto, salt cod whipped to a cream, the bitter red radicchio of Treviso, and the Tiramisu that was invented here. Grappa comes from Bassano, white asparagus from the same town in spring, and the coffee culture, as anywhere in Italy, is taken seriously.

What Essenza Escapes arranges across Venice and the Veneto goes well beyond the villa. Early access to St Mark's Basilica and the Doge's Palace ahead of the crowds, a private boat through the quiet corners of the lagoon to Torcello, visits to Palladian villas, tastings in the Prosecco hills and the Amarone cellars of Valpolicella, tickets and timing for the Verona opera, and mountain guides in the Dolomites. The hosts, boatmen, and guides in the Essenza Escapes network here know how to give guests the region's icons without the crowds, and the quieter Veneto that lies beyond them.

Frequently Asked Questions

When is the best time of year to visit Venice and the Veneto for a villa holiday?

April through to October are the strongest months, with warm weather, the cities at their best, and the countryside and hills in full color. Summer is hot and busiest in, which is when the Dolomites and Lake Garda come into their own, alongside a full calendar of events from the Verona opera to the Venice Film Festival in early September. Autumn brings the grape harvest and thinner crowds, while winter is quiet and atmospheric, with the Venice Carnival in February and skiing at Cortina. Whatever the season, Essenza Escapes can match the timing to what you most want from the trip.

Which airports serve Venice and the Veneto, and how far are they from the villas?

Venice Marco Polo (VCE) is the main gateway, on the edge of the lagoon, with Verona about 1.25 hours away by road and the Dolomites around Cortina about 2.5 hours. Verona Villafranca (VRN) in the west is the better choice for Verona and Lake Garda, roughly 30 minutes from the lake, and Treviso (TSF) is a smaller airport handy for the Prosecco hills. For Venice itself, guests transfer from Marco Polo to the city by water taxi or the Alilaguna boat, since the city is free of cars. Essenza Escapes can arrange private transfers from any of these airports.

Do I need a car to explore Venice and the Veneto?

You need a car for the Veneto but not for Venice, where cars cannot go at all. The villas, wine hills, walled cities, and mountains are spread across the region and best reached by car, but in Venice you travel entirely on foot and by boat, leaving the car at Piazzale Roma or in Mestre. Essenza Escapes can arrange car hire or a private driver from any Italian airport.

Can we visit Venice as a day trip while staying in another region?

Yes, and many guests do exactly this. From Lake Garda the train reaches Venice in about 1.5 hours, from Milan in about 2.5, and even from Florence the high-speed train takes only about 2 hours, so a full day in the city and back in time for dinner is realistic from several bases. Venice is at its best in the early morning and the evening, once the day crowds thin, so an early train in and a later train back captures the quieter city rather than just the midday crush. Essenza Escapes can arrange the train tickets and the water transfers that make a day in Venice straightforward.

Is Venice too crowded to enjoy, and how do we avoid the worst of it?

Venice is crowded, but the crowds are concentrated in a few hours and a few places, and they are easy to escape. The day trippers and cruise passengers cluster around St Mark's between roughly 10am and 4pm, so the trick is to be there early or in the evening, to explore the quieter sestieri like Cannaregio and Dorsoduro, and to give the lagoon islands a full day. Essenza Escapes can arrange access to St Mark's Basilica and the Doge's Palace ahead of the crowds, along with a private boat to the emptier corners of the lagoon. Seen this way, Venice is still one of the great experiences in Italy.

How much of the Veneto can we combine in one trip?

More than you might expect, because the region is compact and tied together by fast, frequent rail. Verona, Vicenza, Padua, and Venice sit along a single corridor, most of them within an hour of each other, so from a base on Lake Garda or a stay in Venice you can reach the art cities, the Prosecco country, and the lagoon without long drives. The Dolomites and Cortina are farther, roughly 2 to 2.5 hours, and reward a short separate stay rather than a day trip. Essenza Escapes will help shape an itinerary that balances Venice, the lake, and the mountains around the time you have.
